The Cost of Chronic Migraines" is an artist's book chronicling my personal journey with this disabling condition. As someone who has battled migraines for over twelve years, I felt compelled to make this book to shed light on the profound ways they impact one's life.
The book bursts open, revealing various flaps that unfold from the accordion structure. This design choice symbolizes the sudden onset and unpredictability of a migraine episode, mirroring the abruptness with which it can disrupt one's life.
Beyond the direct financial toll of medical expenses such as medications and doctor visits, sufferers often find themselves robbed of valuable time that could be spent in school, at work, or enjoying meaningful moments with loved ones. Moreover, migraines intrude upon daily life with the constant presence of prescription bottles, sharps containers, and other related paraphernalia. This book is a tangible manifestation of the ongoing struggle endured by those afflicted with this condition.
In the book, a visual representation of the common migraine side effect, visual aura, gradually expands from a small size to a larger one, symbolizing the progression of the blind spot over time. This imagery overlaid on the text, serves to highlight the profound difficulty it introduces in reading—a poignant reflection of how migraines affect one's ability to function normally.
My hope for this book is that it extends a hand of understanding and solidarity to fellow sufferers, forging a sense of community amidst the challenges of chronic migraines. I want those grappling with this condition to know that they are not alone and that through shared experiences, we can find strength and support together. Additionally, I aim to raise awareness among those who haven't experienced migraines firsthand, providing insight into the realities of this condition. By fostering understanding and empathy in the broader community, we can work towards creating a more supportive and inclusive environment for those impacted by chronic illness.
